Celebrating Sea Turtles at the Seychelles Sea Turtle Festival 2016

Children playing the Turtle wheel of fortune!
Green Islands Foundation showed up once again with lots of fun activities and educational games at the family fun day for the Seychelles Sea Turtle Festival held on 6th August 2016. With the help of North Island environment staff, we made sure everybody who visited our stand learnt a little bit more about one of the most charismatic marine species, sea turtles, and why we should protect them.

The festival kicked off on Friday 5th August with an opening ceremony at the Natural History Museum. During the ceremony the winners of the various competitions were awarded and several institutions were recognized for their contribution to sea turtle conservation in Seychelles. We were extremely pleased as one of our own staff, Janske, won first prize for the 3D craftwork competition!

The following day we set up on Beau Vallon beach, alongside other environmental institutions raising awareness and promoting protection of sea turtles. We had exciting games like wheel of fortune and pin the turtle as well as other activities like face painting and coloring activities. The visitors were really enthusiastic and interested to learn more about sea turtles especially the children.

Pin the turtle!

The Seychelles Sea Turtle Festival was first held in August 2013 and has been an annual event ever since.  The festival is an opportunity to unite the many different organisations conducting sea turtle research programmes in Seychelles and to raise awareness of the need for turtle conservation and protection. The family fun day provides the perfect opportunity to share information on turtle monitoring programmes being conducted throughout the Seychelles, and hosting interactive displays with turtle based activities aimed at educating people of all ages in turtle conservation.

Colour the turtle!

We would like to extend a big thank you to the organisers of the Sea Turtle Festival to have invited us and to continue the excellent work they are doing in Seychelles.
