Children playing the Wheel of Fortune |
On Saturday 8th August the Green Islands
Foundation (GIF) teamed up with our partners North Island and Denis Island to
participate in the third Seychelles Sea Turtle Festival. Throughout the day we
hosted exciting educational games showcasing our love for sea turtles and
promoting sea turtle conservation in Seychelles.
Laying turtle eggs |
The festival was hosted on Beau Vallon beach, and many environmental organizations and
interested individuals participated, all of whom share a passion for marine turtles. The aim of the festival is to
raise awareness
of the conservation and need for protection of these endangered turtles among
the general public. The
festival is an excellent platform bringing
together organisations working in sea turtle research and conservation, to
promote collaboration and help celebrate and protect Seychelles' sea turtles.
Pin the Turtle on Denis and North Island |
North Island and Denis Island host healthy breeding
populations of both Green turtles and Hawksbill turtles, which is unique in the
inner islands. By partnering up with their environment staff, we were able to
show what makes these islands special and attractive for the turtles. We
decorated our tent with colourful pictures and messages and displayed specimens
of a Hawksbill turtle, an uncommon creature that the majority of the people on Mahe
have never seen.

Through our 'Wheel of Fortune' game the public learnt
interesting facts about sea turtles and turtle conservation work carried out on
North and Denis Island. The lucky winners of our star prize are Kyle Marie and Michel
Valentin. Kyle won a digital camera sponsored by North Island and Michel won a
reef safari excursion donated by Denis Island and Mason's Travel.
We also had
other activities like 'Pin the Turtle', ‘Turtle Egg-laying Relay Race' and 'Face
Painting'. Children left our stand with sparkly tattoos of our cute and cuddly
turtle friends.
GIF would like to thank the dedicated organizers for the excellent
coordination, and North Island and Denis Island whose assistance was invaluable
in making this year's Sea Turtle festival a success.
